Create a new prescription in iPrescribe

Purpose: This article walks you through how to create and send a new prescription (Rx) in the iPrescribe app.

Audience: Active iPrescribe prescribers

Prerequisites: You must have an active iPrescribe account with prescribing permissions.

Create and send a prescription

Follow these steps in order. Each step opens the next screen automatically.

Open a new prescription

From your iPrescribe home screen, tap the New Rx (pencil) icon.

The patient search screen opens.

Select a patient

Select a patient using one of the following options:

  • Search for a patient by typing their name in the search bar at the top, then select them from the search results.
  • Select a patient from the Recent Patients section.

If the patient is new to your practice, add the patient profile before creating a prescription.

Start a new prescription

Tap the Create New Rx button at the bottom of the patient's profile screen.

The medication search screen opens.

Select a medication

Option A: Medication has a Favorite Rx

If a Favorite Rx appears on the medication search screen, the app pre-populates the prescription details. Tap the medication and skip to Review and send the prescription.

Option B: Medication does not have a Favorite Rx

Search for the medication by typing its name in the search field. If the search results include a Commonly Prescribed section, those medications appear at the top. These are medications you prescribe often.

If the medication you select does not show a dosage beneath its name, select Option C. If it already shows a dosage beneath its name, select Option D.

Option C: Medication does not show a dosage

Tap the medication, then select a dosage from the dropdown. Continue to Enter prescription details, Option B.

Tap the medication to use Smart Sigs. Continue to Enter prescription details, Option A.

The prescription details screen opens.

Enter prescription details

If the medication already showed a dosage in Select a medication, use Option A. If it did not, use Option B.

Option A: Medication already shows a dosage (Smart Sigs)

Select a Smart Sig from the Commonly Prescribed list.

Then complete the following:

  1. Review and confirm the following information:
    • Duration (Days)
    • Quantity
    • Refills
  2. Scroll down, then select one of the following options:
    • Substitution Permitted: allows pharmacies to make substitutions of this drug
    • Dispense As Written: only permits pharmacies to fill medication as prescribed
  3. Enter optional comments to the pharmacist, then tap Continue.

The Rx Review screen opens.

Option B: Medication does not show a dosage (manual entry)

  1. Fill out the following prescription details, then tap Save:
    • Action, Dose, Form, Route, Frequency, and Other
  2. Select and confirm the following information:
    • Duration (Days), Quantity, and Refills
  3. Scroll down, then select one of the following options:
    • Substitution Permitted: allows pharmacies to make substitutions of this drug
    • Dispense As Written: only permits pharmacies to fill medication as prescribed
  4. Enter optional comments to the pharmacist, then tap Continue.

The Rx Review screen opens.

Review and send the prescription

Review your prescription details, then tap one of the following options at the bottom of the screen:

  • Sign and Send: sends the prescription electronically to the selected pharmacy.
  • Add to Favorites: saves the prescription as a Favorite Rx for future use.
  • Add to Pending: saves the prescription to your Pending Rx queue to sign and send later.
  • Discard Rx: cancels the prescription without saving.
