Backline offers users real-time access to cross-organizational, secure messaging.
- 1-on-1 chats are direct, private messages sent between two users. These messages are only visible to the sender and recipient.
- Ad Hoc chats are between multiple Backline users (up to 10 users, including the initiator of the chat).
This article discusses how you can initiate 1-on-1 and Ad Hoc chats in Backline Web.
Start on the Backline Web sign-in screen and log in with your Email Address and Password.

- Select the Add icon on the bottom-left of the page.

- Select Create New Chat and search for the user you wish to initiate a 1-on-1 chat with by using one or more of the following methods:
- Search for the user by entering their name or email address in the search bar at the top of the pop-up window.
- Filter your search by organization by selecting the Organization drop-down menu.
- Filter your search by department by selecting the Department(s) drop-down menu.

- Select the Add button next to the user with whom you would like to start a 1-on-1 chat.

- Select Create Chat.

- The new 1-on-1 chat feed will appear on your Chats tab.

You will now be able to have your 1-on-1 chat with the selected user.

- Select the Add button next to the first user with whom you would like to start an Ad Hoc chat.

- Clear the search criteria from the first user and begin typing the name for the second user, then select the Add button for the second user.

- Repeat Step 5 until you have added all desired users to the Ad Hoc chat. You can add up to 10 users, including yourself. Any more than 10 users will display the following message:

- When you have finished adding all desired users, select Create Chat.

- The new Ad Hoc chat feed will appear on your Chats tab. Ad Hoc chats display a numerical avatar representing the number of users included in the chat. The Members area on the right side of the chat feed shows a list of all users added to the chat.

You will now be able to have your Ad Hoc chat with the selected users.
- To access your 1-on-1 or Ad Hoc chat messages, select the Chats tab on the navigation menu at the top of your screen. Then, select the user or Ad Hoc chat group you wish to send a message to on the left-hand side.

- You can also attach files from your hard drive by selecting the Paperclip icon . This will open a file explorer window for you to select the file you wish to attach by double clicking the file or by single clicking the file and selecting Open.

To forward messages to a user or group with whom you have already established a chat, hover your cursor over the selected message, then click the Forward Arrow icon. Then, search for and select the user or group to whom you wish to forward the message. Click Forward to send the message.
